Grace Lutheran Stained Glass
WE TELL THE STORY OF JESUS THROUGH OUR WINDOWS
People driving by Grace Lutheran Church know us as the church with the big beautiful windows. But our windows are more than just beautiful. They are a ministry to worshippers and to the community, as well.

THE CRUCIFIX
The central element of our stained glass windows is the Crucifix, just as Jesus is the central figure in our lives. The Crucifix symbolizes Christ’s Passion for our redemption.
ESCALLOP SHELL
To the left of the crown and nails is an escallop shell symbolizing the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.
CROWN AND NAILS
To the left of the Crucifix is the crown of thorns Jesus wore and the nails that pierced his hands and feet as He gave up His life for us.
MANGER AND STAR OF JACOB
Beneath the escallop shell is the five-pointed Star of Jacob, symbolizing Jesus and based on the prophecy in Numbers 24:17, “There shall come a Star out of Jacob.” The Oriental manger with supports resembling a cross is the symbol of Jesus’ nativity.
CHALICE AND HOST
To the right of the Chi Rho is the traditional symbol for the Lord’s Supper. The host, a circular wafer with an embossed Greek Cross, rises out of the chalice.
CHI RHO
To the right of the Crucifix is the oldest monogram referring to Christ. The first two letters of the name Christ in the Greek alphabet are X or Chi and P or Rho.
LILY AND OPEN TOMB
Beneath the Chalice and Host are two symbols representing our Lord’s burial and resurrection. The lily reminds us that although the bulb appears to be dead, after being buried it rises to new life. The empty tomb reminds us that the angels didn’t roll away the stone to let Jesus out; they did it to show the tomb was empty. Hallelujah!
HAND OF GOD
The upper left is The Hand of God. The earliest symbol of God is the Manus Dei, and it represents the creative power of God. Genesis 1:1 tells us “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
TRIQUETRA
The three equal arcs of the circle symbolize the equality of the three persons of the Holy Trinity.
Their union symbolizes the unity of divine essence. Their continuous forms symbolize eternity. The fact that they are interwoven symbolizes the indivisibility of the Holy Trinity.
WORSHIPPING FAMILY
These human figures symbolize a Christian family gathering to worship on the Lord’s Day.
GOD’S CREATION
Beneath the Triquetra is God’s Creation, symbolized by the world, the sun, the moon and the stars, all of which God created.
DESCENDING DOVE
The Descending Dove symbolizes the coming of the Holy Spirit. The three-rayed nimbus around the head indicates Deity. We read in Matthew 3:16 that, after Jesus’ baptism, He saw “The Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him.”
SCROLL
To the right of the Dove , the Scroll symbolizes the Word of God. Sometimes an open Holy Bible is used, but the Scroll reminds us that God’s people in the Old Testament read from such a Scroll.
WHEAT AND GRAPES
Heads of wheat and clusters of grapes remind us of the real presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the bread and wine we receive in Holy Communion.
ESCALLOP SHELL
Beneath the Scroll is another escallop shell and stream of water symbolizing our Holy Baptism.
